Teeth Whitening Q & A

What is teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening is a simple and effective cosmetic dental treatment that enhances the aesthetic appearance of your smile. It uses medical-grade solutions, like hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide, to eliminate stains caused by the natural aging process, poor oral hygiene, or tobacco use.

What causes teeth to change color?

The number one cause of tooth discoloration is getting older. Over the years, activities like biting and chewing cause your tooth enamel to wear away, revealing the yellow dentin beneath.

Other factors that cause tooth stains and discoloration include:

  • Oral trauma
  • Tobacco use
  • Regularly drinking dark beverages (coffee, tea, or cola)
  • Eating foods that stain, like tomato-based sauces or berries
  • Taking medication with tetracycline

You might also experience tooth discoloration due to poor dental hygiene. It’s important you try to brush and floss twice a day.

What does teeth whitening involve?

Ontario Chino Dental Center offers in-office chairside teeth whitening with Philips Zoom!

Before recommending teeth whitening, your provider conducts an oral exam and asks what you like and dislike about your smile. They use that information to develop a custom teeth whitening plan that aligns with your needs.

After finalizing a plan, your provider covers your gums and tongue with a protective rubber dam. Then, they carefully apply the Zoom! whitening solution to your teeth. After your teeth absorb the solution, your provider points a special light at them. The light causes a whitening reaction that cuts through the stains and oxidizes your teeth.

Your provider repeats the process multiple times until your teeth are the desired shade of white. Most people experience results that are between 8 and 10* shades lighter.

Are the results of Zoom! teeth whitening permanent?

The results of Zoom! teeth whitening aren’t permanent, but they do last an average of four to six months, and sometimes even longer. To extend your results, the providers recommend practicing good oral hygiene. Brush and floss twice daily and visit Ontario Chino Dental Center once every six months for an oral exam and professional teeth cleaning.

To reduce tooth discoloration, drink dark beverages through a straw and avoid eating foods that stain.
