CROWNS

Top Crowns Specialist

If you have damaged teeth or cavities, dental crowns can prevent further issues, restoring their appearance and function. Ontario Chino Dental Center offers dental crowns to restore teeth that are damaged or decayed to their optimal appearance and function. Dr. Krupakar “Reddy” Yeturu will design your dental crown to fit perfectly over your damaged tooth, protecting it from further injury or decay.

A dental crown, or cap, is a restoration that can be used for a number of purposes. One of the most common uses of a dental crown is to restore a tooth that is significantly damaged or decayed. The crown is custom made to fit over the entire tooth, starting at the gum line, in order to restore the tooth to its original shape and size. Dental crowns can be made of gold, porcelain, or porcelain fused to metal; porcelain crowns are popular because they match the natural color and appearance of your teeth. Our dentist will help you determine which type of dental crown is right for your smile.

Your smile may benefit from a crown if a tooth is damaged or decayed to the point that a dental filling will not provide a successful restoration. Crowns can also be used for a number of other restorative and aesthetic purposes, including:

  • To protect a tooth following root canal treatment
  • To anchor and attach a dental bridge
  • To cover and complete a dental implant
  • To enhance the beauty of your smile
  • To improve a misshapen tooth
  • To strengthen a tooth that is fractured or weakened
  • To support a large filling when little natural tooth structure remains

Crowns Q & A

What are crowns?

Dental crowns are synthetic caps made of gold, porcelain, or porcelain fused to metal. They’re bonded to the top of a damaged or decaying tooth.

Once placed, a crown envelopes your enamel. That reduces the risk of potential complications and makes routine activities like biting and chewing much easier.

What are crowns used for?

Ontario Chino Dental Center uses crowns to:

  • Protect weak or damaged teeth
  • Restore broken or worn-down teeth
  • Cover teeth with large fillings
  • Hold a dental bridge in place
  • Attach to dental implants

You might also benefit from a dental crown if you have a stained or discolored tooth that doesn’t respond to teeth whitening.

What does getting a crown involve?

At Ontario Chino Dental Center, getting a dental crown takes two appointments.

First appointment

Before you receive a crown, your provider conducts an oral exam, takes oral X-rays, and asks about your symptoms, including when they first started and if biting and chewing make them worse. If your X-rays reveal damage or decay, your provider administers a local anesthetic and removes the affected portion of the enamel.

Then, they take digital impressions of your tooth and send them to a dental laboratory. The technicians at the lab use your impressions to design and create a custom dental crown. When they’re finished, you return to Ontario Chino Dental Center.

Second appointment

At your second visit, your provider once again administers a local anesthetic. Once you’re comfortable, he bonds your new crown to the top of your tooth. Your provider removes any excess material, polishes your crown, and provides care instructions. Applying a crown typically takes 45-60 minutes.

How long do crowns last?

Dental crowns last 10-15 years, but you can extend their lifespan with preventive dentistry. The providers recommend brushing and flossing every day and visiting Ontario Chino Dental Center every six months for an oral exam and professional teeth cleaning. In addition, avoid bad habits like chewing on ice, biting your nails, or opening packaging with your teeth.

If you lead a physically active lifestyle or play contact sports, wear a mouthguard to protect your crown from damage.
